Who can make contributions
For Ontario municipal elections, contributions to a candidate may be made by individuals who are residents of Ontario. Corporations and trade unions are not permitted to contribute to candidates, and clubs, associations and similar groups are not eligible to contribute as organizations.
Contribution limits
An individual may contribute up to $1,200 to a single candidate. An individual may contribute up to $5,000 in total to candidates running for offices on the same council or school board. These limits include the value of goods or services contributed to the campaign.
Other contribution rules
- Contributions must come directly from the contributor.
- Contributions over $25 cannot be made in cash.
- If total contributions to a candidate exceed $100, the contributor's name and address are recorded in the candidate's financial statement, which is a public document.
- Contributions to municipal council and school board candidates are not tax deductible.
